Wordsmith raises £10.4m Series B extension, taking total funding to about £62m

Edinburgh legaltech Wordsmith has added $14m (£10.4m) to its Series B in an extension led by Intact Private Capital, lifting total funding raised to roughly $84m (£62m) as the company pushes further into North America.

Wordsmith, the Scottish artificial-intelligence platform built for in-house corporate legal teams, has secured a $14m (£10.4m) Series B extension, less than two months after closing an initial $70m Series B in June.

The extension was led by Intact Private Capital, with participation from existing backers Highland Europe, Index Ventures and FT Ventures. The company did not disclose a post-money valuation for the round.

The fresh capital takes the total Wordsmith has raised to approximately $84m (£62m). The decision to reopen the round so soon after the June close points to sustained investor appetite for legal-sector AI, a segment where enterprise adoption has moved faster than in many other professional-services categories.

Founded in Edinburgh, Wordsmith sells software that automates contract review, legal research and routine advisory work for corporate legal departments rather than for law firms. The company is led by chief executive and co-founder Ross McNairn, a former lawyer, alongside chief technology officer Volodymyr Giginiak, previously at Meta and Microsoft, and chief operating officer Robbie Falkenthal, formerly of KPMG.

Wordsmith says it now serves more than 500 companies and has grown revenue 14-fold year on year. Named customers include BT, the Financial Times, Sage, Starling Bank, Canva and Safelite, a client roster that spans banking, media and consumer technology.

Proceeds will fund a deeper push into North America and an expansion of the company's footprint in the financial services and insurance sectors, where demand for auditable, enterprise-grade legal tooling is rising as regulators sharpen scrutiny of how firms deploy automation.

The backer line-up gives the cap table a mix of growth and sector-specialist capital. Index Ventures and Highland Europe bring later-stage European technology pedigree, while FT Ventures and lead investor Intact Private Capital add strategic exposure to media and financial services respectively, the verticals Wordsmith is targeting next.

For the wider UK ecosystem, the deal is a marker of continued momentum in applied AI outside London, with one of Scotland's fastest-growing software companies extending a substantial round in a cooler funding market. It also underscores how quickly capital is consolidating around a handful of category leaders in legal AI, even as overall deal volumes across the sector remain subdued.

The company has not disclosed headcount targets tied to the raise, nor the split of new versus existing capital within the extension.
