London's Crane Venture Partners has closed $484m (about £359m) across four separate vehicles, eleven years after the firm launched. MassMutual Ventures, a minority shareholder in the management company itself since 2018, anchored every fund and is the central backer of a new $100m US vehicle.
The total splits four ways. Crane III, the firm's third flagship fund, takes $169m (about £125m). Crane APAC I accounts for $150m (about £111m), Crane US I for $100m (about £74m) and Crane Opportunity Fund I for $65m (about £48m), the last of which gives Crane the balance sheet to follow its winners into later rounds rather than watch its stakes dilute.
Crane writes cheques from inception to seed, and takes an active partner-level role in the companies it backs. The new funds extend that mandate across Europe, North America, India and the wider Asia-Pacific region. Crane was founded in 2015 by Krishna Visvanathan and Scott Sage.
The MassMutual relationship is the structural detail that sets the raise apart. MassMutual Ventures has held a minority interest in Crane's management company since 2018 and has anchored all of its funds — an arrangement that puts a US insurer on the cap table of the general partner, not just in the limited partner base.
That relationship deepened in 2025, when Crane agreed to administer MassMutual Ventures' Europe and Asia-Pacific funds, a portfolio totalling $450m (about £334m) across 40 companies. Crane US I now extends the alliance into MassMutual's home market.
"We've always believed that genius knows no borders," said Visvanathan. "Talent is evenly distributed. Opportunity is not."
Doug Russell, managing partner and head of MassMutual Ventures, said the expanded arrangement "underscores our commitment to the venture capital asset class and the United States start-up ecosystem".
Co-founder Scott Sage framed the geographic spread as the point of the structure, arguing the next defining technology company "could just as easily begin in Bangalore, Sydney, London, Toronto, New York or San Francisco".
Crane has been active this year, leading a €10m seed round for Swiss nanotechnology company Chiral. The firm has not disclosed management fee terms, carried interest or the identity of its other limited partners.
The close adds to a heavy year of UK and European fund formation. Recent vehicles include €279m for London's Seedcamp, €210m for 2150, €128.9m for Lansdowne Partners, €128m for Transition Ventures and €70m for Tapestry VC, alongside newer specialist funds from Passion Capital and Osney Capital. Together with Crane, those announcements represent roughly €1.36bn of committed capital now waiting to be deployed at the early stage.
